The Silhouettes Project is a movement that doesn't come around often. Born out of East London, this independent collective is more than just a platform for emerging artists — it's a proper family. Rooted in community and collaboration, it brings together rappers, vocalists, and instrumentalists, creating a melting pot of talent that thrives on mutual inspiration.

I've been lucky enough to follow their journey from the start, and I'm not exaggerating when I say I've seen them perform over ten times. From their first show at the Jazz Cafe to intimate gigs at spots like The Pickle Factory and Hackney Social to their headline gig at KOKO and even slots at Glastonbury, their growth is a testament to the hard work and talent within the collective. What's special is that no two shows are ever the same. The collaborators shift with each performance, backed by a phenomenal live band featuring the likes of Charlie Tappin (C. Tappin), Poppy Daniels, and Harry Ling (Mackwood). This dynamic and ever-changing approach keeps their performances fresh and exciting, keeping you coming back to see them live again and again.

Silhouettes Project

At its heart, The Silhouettes Project celebrates community, creativity, and independence. Founded in 2018 by Asher Korner (Asher Kosher) and Jaden Osei-Bonsu (Eerf Evil), the project emerged to spotlight lesser-known artists across the UK. It was a natural progression from Asher's work at Route 73, a non-profit recording space for emerging artists, and Jaden's career in the youth sector. The idea was simple yet ambitious: facilitating underground and upcoming artists with a space to collaborate and record professionally. The name – 'Silhouettes’ – reflects this ethos, highlighting artists often overshadowed by the mainstream.

Their music is a rich tapestry of hip-hop, neo-soul, jazz, and beyond. Thanks to the wide breadth of collaborators, every track feels fresh and distinctive, yet there's a thread of consistency in the quality and sincerity of the sound. There's a warmth to their sound – a reflection of the communal effort behind it – but it's balanced by moments of stark truths as artists delve into deeply personal themes.

The collective's debut album, released in 2020, featured over 35 artists and became a sensation on streaming services and social media platforms. It melded smooth, jazzy instrumentals with raw, heartfelt lyricism, creating a vibe that feels as intimate as it is ambitious. It's both laid-back and powerful, perfect for late-night reflection or a packed live show. Unsurprisingly, so many of the project's collaborators, from ENNY to Nix Northwest, have gone on to build thriving solo careers.

The second album was built on this foundation, featuring over 50 collaborators, with tracks that weave poetic narratives over lush, soulful backdrops. This second instalment featured heavyweight artists Kojey Radical, Jords, and Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn alongside their eclectic resident artists.

But The Silhouettes Project isn't just about the music. The collective wants to make a statement. The Monopoly-inspired artwork from the first album symbolises their stance against gentrification and the erosion of creative spaces. Places like the Total Refreshment Centre in Dalston, where much of their early work started, are vital hubs for creativity but remain under constant threat from capitalism. The project is a reminder of how essential these spaces are for fostering genuine artistry and community.

Their journey from grassroots beginnings to headline shows and festivals speaks to the collective's undeniable talent and vision. They've stayed true to their DIY ethos, creating something that feels profoundly local and universally resonant. Every show and track celebrates what can happen when artists work together with honesty and intent.
