FKA twigs has constantly challenged conventions; her album EUSEXUA is no exception. While Caprisongs embraced mixtape-style accessibility and Magdalene offered deep introspection, this album carves out a completely different path. It represents a clear shift towards a club-oriented sound, delving into themes of euphoria, sensuality, and transformation through movement. Thematically, it focuses on the dancefloor as a healing space, a concept that twigs expresses with her signature ethereal style.

From the beginning, EUSEXUA stands out as a more upbeat project than its predecessors. The album blends elements of techno, garage, house, drum and bass, and even trip-hop, making it her most club-oriented work to date. Despite this shift, it remains unmistakably an FKA twigs album, retaining its otherworldly, experimental nature and rich, unexpected textural shifts.

The influence of trip-hop, particularly on Girl Feel Good, reflects her past collaborations with Marius de Vries, who has worked with Madonna on Ray of Light and Massive Attack. The styles of these two artists subtly resonate throughout the track. On the other hand, songs like Drums of Death adopt a grittier, more abrasive energy, pushing the experimental aspects of the album to their limits. In some places, the dense electronic production echoes the late SOPHIE's work, which is hyper-digital, chaotic, and intensely physical. While this enhances the album's immersive quality, it can also create a challenging listening experience, especially on the more fragmented tracks.

One of twigs' greatest strengths has always been her voice, which serves as a grounding force amid the album's constantly shifting textures. Her vocals pierce through the soundscapes with a controlled calmness, contrasting the pulsating beats. This balance is essential to the album's success because, without it, the sheer intensity of the production could become overwhelming.

While EUSEXUA is ambitious in its goals, there are moments when it leans into self-indulgence. Some of the tracks shift so abruptly that it feels almost intentionally jarring. This is an interesting creative choice but can make for a challenging listening experience.

Ultimately, EUSEXUA showcases an artist completely in control of her sound. It may not be as revelatory as LP1 or Magdalene, but it builds on the sonic foundations twigs has been refining for years. Longtime fans will appreciate its evolution, while the club-oriented direction has the potential to introduce her to a new audience. It might take a few listens to absorb fully, but once it clicks, EUSEXUA becomes a hypnotic and transportive experience. FKA twigs continues to push boundaries, even when making music designed for the dancefloor.
